if you make a quilted coat. you can buy quilting material in any fabric store that creates an insulated air pocket between the inner and outer lining that will help keep you warm. use a heavy outer material that will help shed water and snow or apply a silicon sealent into the material to make it waterresistant. put in a comfortable inner lining that breathes so it will wick up any persperation you make so it wont leave you wet from your own persperation. leave overhaning flaps that cover an air channel into the inner lining so the Garment can breath and expell excess heat and persperation. have the flaps atach at the botom with velcro so you can open and close them as the situation changes. the best coat will have 2 layers of quilting inner and outer so the heat and rain cant enter or exit through the quilting stitches. or just have the inner lining quilted and the outer covering atached to the inner with holding stitch connections.

fur lining are mainly for decoration and ar not practicle or afordable in most cases. wool is heavy and good insalation but does not breath well and itches teribly. it was used a lot in poeriod times as it was the only thing available but modern knowledge would serve you better.

I allso would like to make a period looking winter coat that would help cover me when riding around in my chair. i would like to get together with you if your interested and design and make some. i have a couple ideas in mind but with my disability cant get around to cut and measure the material to make the coat. i can do the sewing but need help with the measuring and cuting. maybe get something together in time for the known world costuming symposium. if anyone is interested they can contact me at (608) 824-0548. or yahoo IM as myrddinstarhawk. do not use e-mails as i only read them every few days.

Subject: [Jararvellir] OT: Help with making a winter coat

Good day,
I want to make a winter coat for myself. Could anybody please give me suggestions as to what I should use to make it warm? I know using thick wool or a fur lining are options. Are there any other options which are cheaper but just as effective, and where could these materials be acquired?

Thank you,
Denis
