Feel free to cross-post to other lists.
The Educational Collegium at Jararvellir’s 35th Anniversary Celebration will include classes showing how combat intersects with arts and sciences.
Western Martial Arts scholar and educator Bob Charron of St. Martin’s Academy of Medieval Arms will present a keynote presentation, "The Swords of Aristotle and Cicero: Medieval Memory and Educational Systems Manifest in Martial Arts." He will also teach a class (which will include both lecture and discussion) entitled "Science, then Art: Using Physics, Rhetoric and Law to Teach Martial Arts in Medieval Europe."
Kristina Charron (known in the SCA as Mistress Kassandra Tenebrosa) will teach a class entitled "The Eloquent King: Dom Duarte's Treatise on Philosophy and Horsemanship from the 15th c." This lecture will cover Dom Duarte's treatise "Bem Cavalgar," the King of Portugal's writings on philosophy and horsemanship. Although incomplete, this treatise is a wonderful window into the 15th century, discussing not only the art of horsemanship and jousting, but also morals, culture and philosophy of the time that can be utilized even today. This lecture will be accompanied by a slide presentation.
Remember, the pre-registration deadline for Jararvellir’s 35th Anniversary Celebration has been extended until April 15. More information is available at http://www.jararvellir.org/jara35ann.htm.
